Yesterday the director
Paul Feig reboot of the Ghostbusters took a huge step forward by announcing that
Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones, Melissa McCarthy, and Kate McKinnon had been cast
in the lead roles, and that the film would hit theaters on July 22, 2016.
As you might have expected
rumors and scoops are already emerging and the first one post-official-announcement
comes via HitFix, whom claim that the quartette won't be playing new versions
of Zeddmore, Venkman, Stantz, and Spengler, but completely new characters. Furthermore,
if their predictions on Bill Murray's character are indeed true, then this film
will have absolutely nothing to do with the previous films.
So, according to them
"Kristen Wiig is playing Erin Garber, a published author on the subject of
the paranormal. Erin now works for Columbia University."
"Leslie Jones is playing Abby Bergman, who co-authored the book with Garber. Since publication, the two former colleagues had a falling out and went their separate ways. Abby more actively chases ghost a la Ghost Hunters. This tension between academic investigation (Wiig's character) and mainstream media investigation (Jones' character) is central to the story."
"Kate McKinnon is playing Abby Berman's new partner, Jillian."
And…
"Melissa McCarthy is playing Patty, an NYC subway worker who stumbles across the main, supernatural threat in the film."
In regards to Peter
Dinklage it seems that Sony wants him "to play the main villain in the
film. Whether this role is as a ghost or human is unclear."
So far all the
characters seem plausible and in tone with the first films, however if Bill
Murray's character is indeed this next one then I'm afraid that the wink and
the nod might take me and some other fans out of the film.
"Sony also wants
Bill Murray to play a character named Martin Heiss, a man who is "a
professional supernatural debunker who is out to prove that the Ghostbusters
are frauds.""
So, according to this rumor he'll be the complete opposite
of his character from the first films? I could see this working if the first
films hadn't been such a hit, but since they were, and everyone knows who he
is, I'm having my doubts. What do you think?
