Unlike some other some other Guillermo
del Toro movies (Hellboy 3) Pacific Rim did manage to get a sequel. A few months
ago, the director announced that he had plans for second and third entries in
the Mecha vs Kaiju franchise, but since then nothing. In a recent interview,
screenwriter Zak Penn offered a couple of new details about the sequel
including where the script is at this point, and where it will go.
"It’s going well," said
Penn. "Guillermo and I have been passing the script back and forth
and right now it’s in his hands." When asked where the story would
go, Penn responded by saying that "honestly, I don’t think I could
tell you anything that Guillermo hasn’t already said. Obviously as you can
imagine, there’s going to be a lot more about the Kaiju and their origins,
and the world will be in a very different state when we get to this movie.
He and Travis created this enormous universe that’s pretty much like
multiple movies smashed into one. So with Pacific Rim, you could
just assume that all the specific tropes of the movie, like the giant robots
and the giant monsters and all the technology around it, is going to be
explored in more depth. That’s just where we’re going."
Pacific Rim 2 is scheduled to hit
theaters on April 7th, 2017.
