Director Joss Whedon has always
been very outspoken in regards to women's rights, particularly in the film
industry and in superhero movies. Both Marvel and DC have made strives to
"correct" the problem with the announcement of Wonder Woman, and Captain
Marvel, but it still feels like more could be made.
"It's a phenomenon in the
industry that we call 'stupid people'," Whedon
told the Digital Spy. "There is genuine, recalcitrant,
intractable sexism, and old-fashioned quiet misogyny that goes on. You hear
'Oh, [female superheroes] don't work because of these two bad ones that were
made eight years ago', there's always an excuse."
Whedon must be talking about
those horrific Catwoman (WB) starring Halle Berry, and the equally horrendous Elektra
(Fox) starring Jennifer Garner, but don't think the director pulls any punches
about Marvel.
"Marvel
is in a position of making a statement simply by making [a female-led] movie,
which I think would be a good thing to do. But it has to be a good movie, it
has to be a good character, and most of the best characters in Marvel are owned
by Fox, let's face it!"
He has a point. Fox owns the painfully
underutilized and badly written Storm, Jean Grey, and Rogue characters, plus
the more fleshed-out Kitty Pryde, and Mystique, whom although essential in this
last film still feel like secondary characters behind Wolverine, Professor X,
and Magneto.
What do you think?
