The Sony hack story
develops to new and unforeseen ways. According to Mashable (whom has seen some hacked
emails), Andrew Garfield's comments about the studio's interference with Marc
Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and the effect it cause might have upset the
wrong CEO. According to them, Garfield's contract with Sony has been terminated
since actor failed to attend "(with less than an hour of notice)"
a Sony cooperate dinner back in July, where he would have met Sony CEO Kaz
Hirai and other higher-ups, which "was seen as an
affront and slight by the company's Tokyo bosses," and has a result talks for a replacement began in
October.
"I love introducing pp
[Peter Parker] in cap but I know it comes with so many things since we won't
give them what they want what will we give them? We can say it's a cameo but
I'll bet it's more and will involve some of his world and it will be peter and
spidey right," said Amy Pascal in an email to producer Matt Tolmach about
the conversations with marvel and how the character would fit into the MCU.
Pascal
also wrote a memo to herself containing questions that would needed to be
raised to Marvel if Sony decided to reboot the character in Cap 3.
"If we have spiderman in
cap 3. what is our fee and our back end. need script approval, casting approval
of sm and aunt may and consultation of mays house in queens and any other
spiderman locations we may need in future movies. also approval of new spiderman
costume> how long is he in the movie? how closely does it follow the civil
war story line? does the world find out who spiderman is? are there any other
characters from the spiderman universe they are using? can we use one of the
marvel characters in our future spiderman movies not produced by marvel? can we
use cap to set up ss? can drew work with the russos to get this done? are we
renting him out?"
As you might expect the
negotiations between both studios were a give and take, however according to
the emails Sony and Pascal were more on the take side than on the giving one, as
Pascal wanted both merchandising rights and a cut of Captain America: Civil War
box-office where Spidey was going to have a cameo. In regards to the next
Spider-Man standalone Sony wanted complete control, from casting, to the script,
to the director, and it was probably at this point that Marvel decided that it wasn't
worth it.
Pascal raised more questions, which
offer us an idea of their "plan".
"would we have to
dismantle ss?
can drew goddard write the sm
original?
who would direct the sm movie?
what do we do with matt
tolmach and avi?
they can not put spidey in
future spiderman movies or team ups.
we need to keep animation
rights for a theatrical release spiderman movie to be directed by lord and
miller. we need to be able to make spiderman movies after this
movie we need to be able to make the girl team up movie
is it possible to put spidey
in worlds without other characters once we is with iron man and cap
can we have him in cap and
then 6 months later in ss
we have a right to co finance
any movie that spiderman is in and get a production credit
we get to make future movies
with our characters and theirs in a collaborative way but we don't need their
approval. marvel produces a bunch of spiderman movies for sony the way
they do for disney....all spiderman dominant movie are financed snd marketed by
us even though disney will have the merch on everything
we can put the marvel and even
disney logo on ours if we can put sony on theirs?"
So Sony doesn't have
a plan, and they want more than they are willing to give, but what is strange
is that despite it not being critically acclaimed, The Amazing Spider-Man 2
didn't flop, it wasn't the most successful of the entire franchise (Raimi
included), in fact it ranks last, but it wasn't a flop, it made just over $700
million, so why all the drama? Here is
an idea, just make a good, not great, just good The Amazing Spider-Man 3 and
put the Sinister Six and Venom ideas on the shelve for now, they are great but
one step at a time.
What do you think?
