Today at a Sony Corp investor
briefing in Tokyo, CEO Kazuo Hirai affirmed that the Spider-Man movies, and
content based on their PlayStation games will help the company, which has been
in dire situation for awhile now, to increase revenue by as much as 36 percent
over the next three years.
“Entertainment business is an extremely
important part of Sony,” he said. “While it may seem like electronics is Sony’s
main business and entertainment a sideline occupation, the entertainment
business has been profitable for 18 straight years, delivering steady earnings.”
Why does this matter? Well there were
some rumors awhile back about Sony and Marvel possibly coming together and
introduce Spider-Man into the MCU, but now judging by the statement that seems
unlikely.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was a
critical flop and was the lowest grossing film in the series, counting with Raimi's
trilogy.
There were two other Amazing
Spider-Man movies scheduled but both seem to have been delayed indefinitely. As for the spin-offs, The Sinister Six is set
to hit theaters on November 11, 2016, Venom is also unclear whether it is still
on or not, and there were some talks about doing something with a female
character from Spideys universe.
