Despite dropping nine spots in
just three weeks, Gary Shore's Dracula Untold has managed to not lose yet
another spot this week and remain in the top 10.
Starring Luke Evans, Sarah Gadon,
Dominic Cooper, Charles Dance, and Charlie Cox, Dracula Untold is the first in
Universal's attempt at a monster shared cinematic universe.
The Robert Downey Jr. led courtroom
drama The Judge finds itself in the same predicament as Dracula Untold, however
unlike Dracula it has just passed its production budget of $50 million. Let's
hope the film has enough stamina to continue and not underperform.
The Judge also stars Robert Duvall,
Vera Farmiga, Billy Bob Thornton, Vincent D'Onofrio, Leighton Meester, Dax
Shepard, and Balthazar Getty.
Jennifer Garner and Steve Carell
terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day didn't translate to the box-office as
the PG comedy has managed to almost triple its production budget.
Director Miguel Arteta's comedy also
stars Bella Thorn, Dylan Minnette, Megan Mullally, and Jennifer Coolidge.
After a meteoric climb, St. Vincent
drops a spot. The St. Murray led motion picture has only premiered in three
other markets (Portugal, Singapore, and Netherlands) besides the North American
one, so maybe there is still room for improvement.
Written and directed by Theodore
Melfi, St. Vincent also stars Naomi Watts, Melissa McCarthy, Chris O'Dowd, and
Terrence Howard.
John Wick has another motive for vengeance,
his decline from second to sixth. Mr. Wick's production budget is an unknown but
I would venture a guess of around $30 million (give or take the odd $10 million),
so based on this assumption I would say that Mr. Wick is on the right path, especially
if you consider that it has yet to open in the majority of the scheduled
international markets.
John Wick's directors, David Leitch,
and Chad Stahelski are stunt men and stunt coordinators, so the action
sequences are solid and fun, which allied with a simple yet effective story
make for good fun.
Director Jorge R. Gutierrez life and
death PG animation, The Book of Life has managed to hold on to last week's position
and its place in the top five.
Produced by Guillermo del Toro, The
Book of Life counts with the voice-over work of Diego Luna, Zoe Saldana, Channing
Tatum, Christina Applegate, Ron Perlman, Danny Trejo, Ice Cube, and Cheech
Marin.
Still strong is David Fincher's adaptation
of Gillian Flynn's novel, Gone Girl, which is the director's third most
profitable movie to date (adjusting for inflation).
Gone Girl stars Ben Affleck, Rosamund
Pike, Neil Patrick Harris, Tyler Perry, Patrick Fugit, Carrie Coon, Scoot
McNairy, Boyd Holbrook, and Emily Ratajowski.
With the Second World War has
background, and confined to a tank, director David Ayer's drama Fury is already
on the winning side, not only because it managed to hold on to its last week
position but because it already has surpassed its $68 million budget.
Ayer's next project will be the
adaptation of the DC Comics' Suicide Squad for Warner Bros.
Being the most recent "horror"
movie in theaters has helped Ouija to capitalize on Halloween, as it only
dropped one spot since its debut last week.
Like moths to a flame, this weekend's
top spot goes to writer/director Dan Gillroy's crime drama, Nightcrawler, starring
Jake Gyllenhaal as the siren chaser crime reporter, Lou Bloom. The film as
Oscar buzz all around, specially for Gyllenhaal who gives a masterful
performance.
Nightcrawler also stars Bill Paxton,
Rene Russo, Riz Ahmed, and Michael Hyatt.
