Jessica
Chastain has some rich history of what ifs with Marvel. Back in 2012, the actress
gave up her Maya Hansen role in Iron Man 3 due to some scheduling conflicts.
Later, the actress was rumored to be up for the female lead in the upcoming
Ant-Man, but passed on that too. Now in an interview to The Wrap, the actress
asks where is the Scarlett Johansson standalone movie?
“Where is the Scarlett
Johansson superhero movie? I don't understand it, why is it taking so long
for this?” Chastain asked TheWrap, rhetorically and with no small
degree of animation. “This woman clearly shows that people want
to go see her in the movies. ‘Lucy,’ didn't it beat ‘Hercules’ by a lot opening
weekend, when it was made for a lot less? She shows that she kicks ass, she's a
great actress. ‘Under the Skin’ is an incredible film, and why are we still
waiting for a go-ahead on a superhero movie starring Scarlett Johansson?
“To me, it's a no-brainer,” she added. “You want to make money, put Scarlett
Johansson in a superhero movie!”
It
clearly is a no brainer. Lucy already made $217 million and change on a production
budget of $40 million. And even if you add another ten or twenty million for
marketing and subtract the 20% from theaters, you end up with a respectable $125
million of profit (give or take). While Hercules only made thus far $160
million on a production budget of $100 million, adding the marketing, which was
bigger than Lucy's, there for more expensive, and I wonder if it already made
its money back?
On a side note, Rebecca
Hall landed the Maya Hansen role in Iron Man 3, after Chastain passed it up.
