Warner Bros. has been sitting on the Death Note
adaptation since 2009, with little to no movement, until now!
According to The
Tracking Board, director Gus Van Sant has jumped in to helm the adaptation
after Shane Black cited creative differences over the adaptation, particularly Light's
mission and the use of shinigami, and abandoned the project.
The latest draft of the script was written by Black,
Anthony Bagarozzi, and Charles Mondry.
There are currently three Death Note live-action
adaptations, but they were all made in Japan - Death
Note (June 2006), Death Note: The Last Name (November
2006) and the spinoff film, L:
Change the World (February 2008).
The series Death Note centers
around a high school student named Light Yagami who discovers a supernatural
notebook that allows him to kill anyone by writing the victim's name while
picturing his or her face. The plot follows his attempts to become God by
creating a New World cleansed of evil, using the book.
