For a while, the prospects of a
Pacific Rim sequel looked grim, but now, and perhaps because Legendary changed
dancing partners, from Warner Bros. to Universal a sequel is being developed.
In a recent interview to Shock Till
You Drop, Guillermo del Toro said that changing from one studios that already has
a established franchises to one that doesn't, wasn't the reason why the movie
was greenlit.
"No,
when we finished the first one, we said, 'Well, we could go here or
there,'" he said. "At
some point, Thomas [Tull] and I met and we said, “You know what, it took such an
effort to create the world, we would like to continue.” When Legendary moved,
they moved with that property. Thomas took it with him, so it’s a fortunate
coincidence of events but we started talking about it before they made the
move."
Conversation then moved to the actual sequel, and the
director was asked if we would be visiting the Kaiju's world, and while he
refused to go into details, the filmmaker gave some hints about the direction
of the film.
"You’re
asking the right questions but not necessarily the way you think. If you think
are we invading their world, we’re not, but we’re showing more of that world."
