Screenwriter Dante Harper is the latest addition to
the live action adaptation of Katsuhiro Otomo's manga and 1998 anime, Akira,
which has been stuck in development hell for years now. According to Deadline,
Warner Bros. has hired Harper to pen the script for director Jaume Collet-Serra
(Non-Stop).
Back in 2012 Warner Bros. pulled the plug on Serra's
adaptation due to budget concerns. This version of had Garret Hedlund, Ken
Watanabe, Helena Bonham Carter and Kristen Stewart attached to star, but it's
unclear if any of them are still on board.
The studio's change of heart comes probably from the
success (mostly international) that Harper achieved with his adaptation of
author Hiroshi Sakurazaka novel All You Need is Kill, aka Edge of Tomorrow,
which with a $178 million budget got $351, 514 and change.
