Avengers NOW! - Falcon Is Cap; Iron Man Goes Dark; More On Female Thor; More Ant-Man, Doctor Strange, Medusa; Inferno & Others

Marvel Comics is preparing some significant changes to three of their biggest names, and will shine the spotlight on a few others in an initiative they are calling Avengers NOW!

After announcing that Thor would be "rebooted" as a woman, Marvel now reveals that Sam Wilson, aka The Falcon will be the next person to take up the Captain America mantle, but that's not all. Iron Man goes a bit dark, and a few other characters prepare to have a new light shine upon them.

Just two days ago Marvel announced on The View that Thor would no longer be able to pick up the hammer, and that a new female character would. Now there is a bit more info on what exactly is going to happen, as Marvel's Editor in Chief, Axel Alonso says that “for reasons that will be revealed in Original Sin, Thor won’t be able to pick up the hammer. Someone has to pick up the hammer. And someone does. And they become Thor.”

He then adds, “there are several women in Thor’s life, and one of them is going to be the new Thor. You aren’t going to find out who it is for some time. This is a slowly unfolding mystery.”

According to Alonso, "The newly-transformed Superior Iron Man has very ambitious plans for the city that some of its residents embrace, but not all.” Alonso adds, “like the Superior Spider-Man, Superior Iron Man is a character that’s hard to root for.”

As for Sam Wilson becoming the new Captain America, Alonso says it's “very much a jumping-on point [for people] who both like the Captain America and really enjoyed the second Captain America movie.”

These are the big three, but there are a selected few that will gain new life in the upcoming months, and they are Ant-Man, Doctor Strange, Scarlet Witch, Medusa, Inferno, Deathlok, and the Winter Soldier.

It makes sense that Marvel Comics would try to ride the wave of success of their movies, and try to help upcoming ones like Ant-Man and Doctor Strange, but the addition of Medusa and Inferno to these comic reboots, makes me wonder if the studio is planning to do the much begged Inhuman movie.

Although Alonso won't officially confirm which characters will get new solo books, he does say that the publisher has several female-focused books on the market now. “There was a time about two and a half years ago, when we were canceling X-23, and I realized that was the last of our female-helmed titles like Elektra, Black Widow, She-Hulk, Ms. Marvel, Captain America, Storm, and the all-female X-Men”so whether or not Scarlet Witch will join their ranks will be something that will be revealed in coming months.

For now this is all, but expect to hear more about Avengers NOW! at SDCC.

What do you think of the upcoming changes?
