Love. Love is what drives us fans to go one-step further from just admiring and create objects, artwork, etc… based or inspired on whatever geek us out. We see passion projects all the time, from clothing, to customized action-figures, game mods, props, illustrations, artworks, even your sketches on the side of that boring schoolbook.
For artist David Guivant from New Caledonia, an Island
in the South Pacific, its fan made films, whether they are live-action shorts,
animations, or opening sequences, David's passion seems boundless.
David's latest project is called Captain Future and
it's based on author's Edmond Hamilton classic sci-fi pulp and a Japanese
anime from the 70'. Check it out below, after his description of the project
and how he made it, plus watch his previous works and a snippet of what's ahead.
As an admirer of classic Animes and Mangas I am now
working on a new project called: CAPTAIN
FUTURE (Live Action Anime) inspired
by the SCI-FI Classic created by Edmond Hamilton and the Japanese Anime from
the 70's. The main character is Curtis Newton, a brilliant scientist and
adventurer who roams the solar system solving problems, righting wrongs, and
vanquishing futuristic supervillains.
The hero himself had
many incarnations and different features, depending on various artists'
impressions, my project takes places 5 years after the events described in the
Novels and the Anime.
The project is all
produced using 2D compositing techniques, following director Kazuaki Kirya's
footsteps (Casshern, Goemon) where cartoon and live action collide. (No 3D has
been involved).
Captain Future has already been selected to be
screened at several events, including:
Tri-Cities
International Fantastic Film Festival 2014 (Washington), Gameplay 2015
(Belgium) , Star Geek Universe 2 (France) , Malta Comicon 2014 (Malta),
Geekopolis 2014 (Paris) and Fedcon 2014 (Germany).
Most elements used in this reel are composites made of food !
Director George Lucas, used potatoes for the asteroids in the Empire
Strikes Back? Why not us?
Here are some exemples that were used :
Planet - Ice cream Scoop
Creatures - Eggrolls, Pizzas, Chicken Tandoori, Eggs, Pepperoni
Hyper Space - Stretched lettuce...
Asteroids - Chicken Nuggets (Home made)
Hardware, armor and spaceships have been done using pieces of Fishing
Reel as well as camcorders.
This is how it can be done using a little bit of imagination without
crowd funding and spending a huge amount of budget.
Star Wars the Solo Adventures (Part
of VFX crew: Modeling, Animation, texturing)
Anthro (Conceptual work for Head up
Display)
Invincible Iron Man Tv Show (2D Frame
by Frame Animation - Director and vfx)
David's next project is a live version of the popular
and much beloved Mobile - Armored - Strike - Kommand, or M.A.S.K., which is
slated for a December 2016 release.
Next week David will sent us some pictures he took of
a Gundam themed café, so don't forget to check them out.
