Even though
producer Lauren Shuler Donner confirmed that Channing Tatum will be playing
Gambit, the actor has yet to sign on for the role, even though the actor
confirms that things are starting to move forward.
Speaking to MTV,
the actor confirmed that progress is being made, but also revealed that he
wants a Gambit standalone movie before the character joins the rest of the
X-Men.
“Creatively, we’re starting to chug forward. Obviously
there’s nothing [official],” Tatum told MTV News. “There are only conversations
and dreams right now, really.”
“I’ve been pretty vocal about wanting to be the part
of Gambit for a very long time,” said Tatum. “It’s a weird, pinching-myself
moment that we’re even having the conversation.”
Recent rumors
have Gambit be making his return in the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse, but the actor has
other ideas for the character, mainly because he wants a standalone movie
before Gambit joins the team.
“We’ve talked about it being a standalone, first, and
actually trying to change the ‘hero, superhero movie.’ Because Gambit is not
your typical hero. He’s a thief. He walks on the gray. I’m hoping we can change
it a little bit, and then ultimately feather into the other ones.”
What do you
think? Standalone before team-up?
