Andy Serkis Talks Working With Mark Ruffalo On The Hulk For Age of Ultron

When you talk about motion capture, the first thing that jumps to mind is actor Andy Serkis, who is best known (wrongly) for his work as Gollum, the Witch King, King Kong, and more recently Caesar in the new Apes franchise. What you might not know is that in 2011, Serkis and his friend Jonathan Cavendish founded The Imaginarium Studios, which specializes in motion capture performances, whether it being for film, animation, tv, or video games.

The studio is currently working as a consultant in some of the biggest projects of coming years, like Avengers: Age of Ultron, and Star Wars: Episode VII.

In a recent interview to Variety, Serkis refrained himself from talking about the entry in the Star Wars franchise, but he did talk about his work with actor Mark Ruffalo, and his Hulk.

"The Imaginarium is the performance capture consultant, and I’m playing a role [in both, Age of Ultron and Episode VII]. On ‘The Avengers,’ I’ve been working closely with Mark Ruffalo.  Performance capture was used on the previous “Hulk,” but not to the same extent, Mark is using it now. There are tools and ways of working with an actor that makes them feel that they own the character. And a character the size of the Hulk needs ownership, which Mark has now."

In a previous statement, Ruffalo revealed that there would be more Hulk in Age of Ultron, than there was in the first film, so maybe this is why Whedon thought bringing in Serkis, who is a master in motion capture, was a smart move.

Opening on May 1st, 2015, Avengers: Age of Ultron stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, James Spader, Thomas Kretschmann, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Cobie Smulders, Paul Bettany, Samuel L. Jackson, and Josh Brolin (rumored to play Thanos).
