Pete's Dragon Is Back

Now i know this isn't the type of movie you would be expect me to write about but i used to watch it when i was a kid so...bear with me.

In the 70's Disney put out some of my favorite childhood movies, like Bedknobs and Broomsticks (L/A), The Aristocats (A), Robin Hood (A), The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh (A), The Rescuers (A) and Pete's Dragon, which was about Pete, an orphan living with abusive foster parents who finds a dragon. The film starred Sean Marshall as Pete, Mickey Rooney, Shelley Winters and Red Buttons.

Now!, Disney has tapped Toby Halbrooks and director David Lawery to pen the script, which is an odd choice, given Lowery last foray into writing and directing was with the crime thriller Ain't Them Body Saint, which doesn't isn't very Disney. Nevertheless, apparently the studio liked the director's work and is now in talks for him to also direct the remake.

According to The Wrap Halbrooks and Lowery have significantly changed the story for modern audiences, for instances it won't be a musical.

At this time it's unclear if Pete's Dragon will be Lowery's next job as the director is also adapting Kevin Power's The Yellow Birds, which is about the author's experiences in Iraq as an Army machine gunner.

Anyway i'm fine with it as long as they don't go for a super realistic dragon, we don't need another Smaug.
