A couple of day ago we reported that The Cabin in the Woods director Drew Goddard had signed on to write and direct Sony's spinoff of The Amazing Spider-Man, The Sinister Six. Now however it appears that due to his busy schedule Goddard was forced to depart, by his own volition, of 20th Century Fox's sci-fi film The Martian, which he wrote.
With Goddard writing and directing The Sinister Six
and also directing Marvel and Netflix's Daredevil series, Fox wasn't keen to
wait for the director to have time to helm the project, so the studio is now on
the lookout for another director.
The Martian is based on Andy Weir's e-book, and the
story revolves around an astronaut who becomes stranded on the big red planet
and must find a way to survive so he can return to Earth. The project has been
described as a cross between Apollo 13 and Cast Away, but "quite different"
from Gravity.
Matt Damon is on top of Fox's list to lead the project,
so the studio is keen to hire a director that will make the actor eager to sign
on.
