Lately remakes and adaptations
reign in Hollywood, so it was just about time that a Starship Troopers remake
was put in motion. The idea for the remake of Paul Verhoeven’s cult adaptation
of the classic sci-fi novel by Robert A. Heinlein Starship Troopers has been
around since 2012 and some rumors have surfaced regarding the film, mainly that
the satirical feel of the first film would be somewhat transformed into
patriotism.
In Twitter, one half of the writing
team behind the project, scribe Zack Stentz said that the new film will be "less
a satire & more an actual adaptation of the Heinlein novel". Stentz then
added that it will be like “'An Officer & A Gentleman' in power armour,”
This new concept might be cause
for trouble for the legions of fans of the original film, and one in
particular, director Paul Verhoeven, who recently saw his Total Recall
adaptation be destroyed in a remake and might be somewhat concerned with this
year’s PG friendly RoboCop remake.
Before there was any confirmation
that a new Starship Troopers was in development, Verhoeven said in an interview
that:
“I don’t know if they’re going to
do 'Starship Troopers' after the failure of 'Total Recall'.”
“Yes, they bought the rights, we
know that, but I really thought they made a mistake when they did the remake by
making it so serious. “
“I’m not so sure [that approach]
will work for ['Starship Troopers’] either. I think all of these films are
accepted because they don’t take themselves so seriously. There’s a lightness,
you believe it, but we also know it’s not true.”
At this point there isn’t any
news regarding cast, or release date.
