Edgar Wright’s Ant-Man will be a
big gamble for Marvel, since both the title and character don’t stand on top of
pop culture like Captain America or Thor did when they first got turned into
films, but that doesn’t mean that they were going to skip over the talent pool
when it comes to casting. Last month it was announced that actor Paul Rudd was
going to lead Wright’s comic book adaptation as Ant-Man, but the question then was
which one? Well now we know.
Marvel has announced that Academy
Award and recent Golden Globe winner (Behind the Candelabra) Michael Douglas
will play Hank Pym, the first Ant-Man, opposite Paul Rudd as Scott Lang. Marvel
Studios President Kevin Feige has this to say about the casting choice:
“With Hank Pym’s rich history in the Marvel
Universe, we knew we needed an actor capable of bringing the weight and stature
to the role that the character deserves,” said Marvel Studios President Kevin
Feige. “We felt incredibly relieved when Michael Douglas agreed to step into
the part with the charm and fortitude he brings to every character he inhabits,
and couldn’t be more excited to see what he will do to bring Hank Pym to life.”
So Michael Douglas will play Hank
Pym and Paul Rudd Scott Lang. Back in 2006 director Edgar Wright, who was
already attached to direct Ant-Man, explained that his idea was to have a more seasoned
Hank Pym, aka Ant-Man and then the new Ant-Man, aka Scott Lang in the same
movie. Well after the Michael Douglas story broke out this afternoon, the
director took to Twitter and pointed out to this interview he gave to SHH:
“The idea that we have for the
adaptation is to actually involve both. Is to have a film that basically is about
Henry Pym and Scott Lang, so you actually do a prologue where you see Pym as
Ant-Man in action in the 60′s, in sort of “Tales to Astonish” mode basically,
and then the contemporary, sort of flash-forward, is Scott Lang’s story, and
how he comes to acquire the suit, how he crosses paths with Henry Pym, and
then, in an interesting sort of Machiavellian way, teams up with him.”
I’m intrigued to see how all the pieces
of the puzzle will fit in, and this new addition to the cast certainly bodes
well to the success of the film.
Ant-Man comes out on July 31st,
2015.
