Oh No!! – Shakespeare In Love And Rounders Sequels Plus More Bad News

For all intents and purposes Miramax is dead and buried, but its founders Bob and Harvey Weinstein are planning to dance on its grave. According to Deadline the Weinstein Company has finalized a deal that will allow them to rummage through Miramax’s film library and develop future films and tv series based on them.

So far their plans include Shakespeare in Love and Rounders sequels and tv series based on Good Will Hunting and Flirting with Disaster. But it’s not only developed films they focusing on, apparently there are some that were/are in development that will also be developed, like The Alibi, a comedy written by Stephen Colbert that’s about creating alibis for cheating spouses and The Ninth Life of Louis Drax, “a script that was being developed by the late Anthony Minghella and Sydney Pollack,” based on the novel of the same name by author Liz Jensen.

At this point not much is known about the projects but Harvey Weinstein had this to say about the Shakespeare in Love sequel:
“I personally have never made a sequel, but I will make Shakespeare in Love as one. I’ve always wanted to do that and now we have the impetus to. There is so much intellectual property, and we’re in an age where, for however long it lasts, content is king.”

Feelings aside (I hated it), I usually I don’t have a problem with sequels but this time it’s just weird. I know that Shakespeare in Love was the first film that legitimized Miramax and the Weinstein brothers in Hollywood by winning seven Oscars but still let it go, I mean why make a sequel? Is there a story that needs to be told? Did people at the end of the film thought there was more to the story thus a sequel needs to be made? No! It was an ok romantic movie, and that’s it, no need for a sequel.

Moving on. Rounders was more of a cult hit than a mainstream one, so according to Harvey Weinstein the key to this successful sequel is to make it more international?
““I’ve discussed making Rounders 2 with Matt Damon and I would say that’s going to be instantaneous,” Weinstein continued. “The guys [writers David Levien and Brian Koppelman] have a great idea, a way to make it more international where you start the card game in Paris, that’s all I want to say. There might be a certain beautiful Parisian actress involved in it, and then we’re off to the racetrack and Vegas with Matty and Edward Norton, and a new supervillain to replace John Malkovich.” Weinstein is eyeing Robert De Niro for that role.”

International? Really?

Well these seem to be all brilliant ideas, so god only knows what’s in store for the Good Will Hunting and Flirting with Disaster tv series.
