Director Ari Folman’s animations are all but standard; they aren’t the same cookie cutter type of animation that prevails in mainstream and indie feature animations, so when he announces that he will make a film based on the life and diary of one of the most famous and talked about victims of the Holocaust, what comes to mind is not how dare he, but why didn’t he made it sooner.
Folman’s previous two animated films, Waltz with
Bashir and The Congress, proves that the filmmaker is not only comfortable with
animation but also that isn’t afraid of mixing things up, I mean Waltz with
Bashir was a documentary and in The Congress Folman mixed live-action with
different animation techniques.
The writer and director is intended in making this
film family orientated, since he believes that it’s important to keep the
memory of Anne Frank alive with the younger audience.
“Bringing the
Anne Frank Diary to all screens is a fantastic opportunity and challenge. There is a real need for new artistic
material to keep the memory alive for younger generations.”
THR reports that “The filmmakers have been granted
complete access to all of the archives of the Anne Frank Fonds Basel, founded
by Anne’s father Otto Frank as well as to all the branches of the Anne Frank
Fonds worldwide.”
Let’s hope Folman’s attempts at keeping “… the memory alive
for younger generations” does better than the previous one by Justin Bieber.
