In 1977, ABC television debut to the World on of the most significant shows too date, the miniseries Roots, based on Alex Haley book Roots: The Saga of An American Family. The eight part miniseries chronicled the lives of an African-American family, from 1750 to 1861, all of whom descendants from Kunta Kinte, a slave.
The
miniseries was such a massive hit, not only in the numbers, being seen between
130 and 140 million people but by exposing countless people to a dark time in
America history.
It seems
that the popular story will once again be brought back to the tv. According to
Deadline the History Channel is developing a remake of the series, which will
be based on the original miniseries and book.
“We
would like to revive that cultural icon for a new audience.” said History’s
Executive Vice-President Dirk Hoogstra.
In
the last couple of years the History Channel has had a string of successes, first
with Hatfields & McCoys, then with The Bible and then Vikings, so we can
assume that once again the networks’ quality will be imprinted in the project.
