Now that Star Wars: Episode VII is seemingly in gear and moving forward, thanks in no small part to the return of screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan has co-writer, many feel that the new film or films need to return to their roots and feel “real” again, which was something that the previous prequels trilogy lacked, and was one (of many) of the factors why so many people hated the them. And we talk of “real” it’s not only the tone of the film which were completely different between the two trilogies but the use of practical effects vs. CGI.
But in this and age where CGI is prevalent in almost
every movie, even those you assume that they aren’t even needed, does a movie
like a new Star Wars installment cope with less CGI? Apparently the answer is
yes. According to Yahoo’s inside source, the fastest ship in the galaxy is
already built and is waiting to be used.
“A full-scale
1:1 Millennium Falcon has been built as well as the interiors of the ship for
filming. The Falcon is done – inside and out. The sets were built off-site,
ready to move when Lucasfilm/Bad Robot were ready to move into Pinewood.”
I think that both techniques are valid and each have
their strong and weak points, but overall I think that practical effects give
the actors the opportunity to have a better performance than CGI. So if they
have truly built the 1:1 full-scale of the Millennium Falcon and perhaps other
ships and sets it will add to the realism of the new installment and make it
believable once again.
