Although the release date changed from February, 2014 to September, 9th 2014, 20th Century Fox seems happy with Wes Ball’s adaptation of the young adult adaptation of James Dashner’s four book series, and is keen on starting the procedures for the sequel.
Per
Deadline, Fox has acquired the rights for Dashner’s second book titled The
Scorch Trials and has brought in writer T.S. Nowlin to start working on the
script, under the supervision of Ball, which means that the director should
return to do the sequel, if the studio decides to make one.
Starting
to work on a sequel before the first movie is released has become a trend that
not always work, case in point The Mortal Instruments: City of Ashes was
supposed to be the sequel to the big young adult film The Mortal Instruments:
City of Bones, but because it failed miserably at the box-office the studio put
the brakes on the whole sequel thing.
