It’s not uncommon to have two very similar films in the
same year, but when one of them without warning pulls a fast one and
overshadows the other, than it’s something that we need to take notice, and
that’s exactly what happened in this year’s battle for the White Houses.
Everyone was assuming that Roland Emmerich’s White House Down, starring
Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx was going to be a big summer box-office hit but
it failed short, only grossing $73 million, on the other hand, Antoine Fuqua’s smaller
budget action film, Olympus Has Fallen starring Gerard Butler, Aaron Eckhart,
Morgan Freeman, Angela Bassett, and Radha Mitchell was a huge hit, grossing
$161 million.
It’s not difficult to see why Fuqua’s White House film
was better at the box-office than the one by Emmerich, script. The overall
story and quality of the script in Fuqua’s Olympus Has Fallen despite not being
something of beauty was well developed and “credible”, as opposed to a gun
shooting, rocket shooting, elevator shoe stopping President in Emmerich’s White
House Down.
These (and more) simple facts made Olympus Has Fallen eligible
for a sequel, titled London Has Fallen.
According to SD, London Has Fallen will count with Gerard
Butler, Aaron Eckhart, Morgan Freeman, Angela Bassett, and Radha Mitchell in their
respective roles in a new story that will involve an attack at London during
the funeral of the British Prime Minster.
London Has Fallen is expected to start shooting in May of
2014, which probably means that director Antoine Fuqua won’t return to helm the
project, since he is busy with the post-production of his latest film The Equalizer
starring Denzel Washington, which opens in September of 2014.
