Although
preparing his next film (Mission: Impossible 5), writer and director Christopher
McQuarrie is already thinking about the project after that. According to
Deadline McQuarrie will direct and produce an adaptation of the 1970’s anime
Star Blazer.
McQuarrie’s
Star Blazer or Space Battleship Yamato won’t be the first live action
adaptation that the anime has. In 2010 director Takashi Yamazaki brought the
anime into the big screen with a live action adaptation that was a box-office
hit, ousting Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows – Part 1 from the number one
spot in the Japanese market and receiving mostly positive reviews.
Here
is the plot of the anime:
“In
the distant future, the war between the human race and the Gamilon has taken
its toll on the planet Earth. Constant bombardment of radioactive asteroids has
rendered the planet's atmosphere uninhabitable. As a means of relief aid, Queen
Starsha of the planet Iscandar offers the Earth Forces a device that can
completely neutalize the radiation off the planet. For this task, the space
battleship Yamato is launched from the remains of its World War II ancestor on
a 148,000 light-year journey. However, the crew of the Yamato has only one
Earth year to travel to Iscandar and back, or the human race will come to an
end.”

As
for McQuarrie’s next film, Mission: Impossible 5, production is set to start in
London next February with actors Tom Cruise and Simon Pegg already confirmed to
star.
I’m
a big anime fan, and so far only Japanese productions have been somewhat successful
in adapting either anime or manga to live action. Japan’s best efforts are so
far the Death Note trilogy, which despite making some changes to the original
story still holds true to its origins. Other good adaptations that came from
Japan are Ichi the Killer or Detroit Metal City. On the other hand, despite
saving some face with the Transformers franchise the States managed to completely
destroy the Dragonball manga and anime with the absurd and gut-wrenching
Dragonball Evolution and Speed Racer and with news and rumors that a Bleach and
Akira live action adaptations are in the pipeline, fans should be worry.
