With
J.J. Abrams working on Star Wars: Episode VII, the director chair on the new
Star Trek franchise is suddenly vacant, and with the latest installment
grossing at 450 million, Paramount is already looking to hire a new replacement
to start working on a third movie.
Some
names have been mentioned as a possible J.J. Abrams replacement, like Attack
the Block director Joe Cornish or Brad Bird, but apparently a new name has popped,
G.I. Joe: Retaliation director, Jon M. Chu.
According
to LR, the G.I. Joe director is at the top of the list as possible contender to
occupy the director chair. The only problem with this rumor is that Chu is
currently working on the next Joe film, which should be released in the same
year as Star Trek 3, so either he drops Joe for Trek or remains in the Joe
world and stays away from Star Trek.
P.S.
One other name has appeared on our radars, Drew Goddard. Goddard wrote
Cloverfield, Lost, Alias, Angel, Buffy: The Vampire Slayer, WWZ and Lost, and
directed and wrote The Cabin in the Woods. He is currently working on the
screenplays for Robopocalypse and a Cloverfield sequel, but since both projects
seem in some sort of limbo, or at least the Cloverfield sequel seems to be, he
might have the opportunity to tackle Star Trek.
