Fans
of Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings Trilogy, The Hobbit and of J.R.R. Tolkien
are going crazy with the anticipation of the second film in the trilogy of The
Hobbit that is coming out later on this year, but has always the marketing exec’s
are here to save the day.
A
new image of actress Evangeline Lilly in action as Tauriel in the upcoming
Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug has become available via
EW.
Tolkien
fans might by a little bit upset because, with the first Lord of the Rings
Trilogy, Jackson adapted three books for three movies, now because there is
only one book to adapt to a new trilogy, Jackson had to be creative and fill
the gaps, with locations, story and characters that weren’t in the original
script. One of the gaps is the character played by Lilly, Lauriel, which
according to the actress “is the head of the Elven Guard. She’s a Sylvan
Elf, which means she’s of a much lower order than the elves we all became
acquainted with in The Lord of the Rings. She doesn’t hold the same kind of status that Arwen or
Galadriel or Elrond or Legolas do — she’s much more lowly. She sort of goes
against the social order of the elves a little bit.” Personally I don’t
have a problem with a new character, but in the first Hobbit we could see
Jackson filling in the gaps, and it sort of put me off.
In
an interview to EW, Lilly talks about the relationship between her character (Tauriel)
and Legolas played by Orlando Bloom:
“Tauriel’s
relationship with Legolas is significant. They’ve known each other since they
were children, and Legolas’ dad, [Elven king] Thranduil, has a soft spot for
Tauriel and sees something very special in her. So if you grow up side by side,
and your dad has a very special spot in his heart for this young woman who’s a
fantastic warrior, I think it’s hard not to notice her.” She laughs. “That’s probably as
much as I can say.”
Besides
Evangeline Lilly we can see Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen, Luke Evans, Lee Pace,
Stephen Fry, Richard Armitage and Orlando Bloom in The Hobbit: The Desolation
of Smaug.
