Man
of Tai Chi
This
Mandarin-Cantonese-English production is the directorial debut of Keanu Reeves.
If we take all of the names involved in this project into consideration, Man of
Tai Chi is going to be one of the great martial arts movies of this generation.
Tiger Hu Chen (Kung Fu Man), Simon Yam (Ip Man), Karen Mok (Black Mask), Iko
Uwais (The Raid: Redemption) and legendary action choreographer Yuen Woo-Ping (The
Matrix and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon).
The
story is set in Beijing, where a young martial artist is lured into an underground
fighting tournament.
In
an interview to MTV Keanu Reeves said that:
“It was tough. It was just too big and
too much. We had to ship it to China. All sorts of practical consideration ran
into the vision and the dream,” he said. “It certainly influenced the way that
we went forward in terms of shooting some of the fight scenes in terms of the
organicness and movement of how we shot some of the fight scenes. I just
couldn’t go on top. [laughs] I couldn’t do
an overhead shot with no cut into a
close up.”
Keanu Reeves also stated that Man of Tai Chi is going to have 18 fights with a combined time span of 40 minutes.
