Bad news people, Futurama got
cancelled. Comedy Central, has choose not to renew Futurama for an eighth
season.
For those of you that don’t
remember, Futurama lasted four seasons before it got cancelled due to low
ratings. But after the reruns on Adult Swim increase the popularity of the
show, Comedy Central decided to bring back the show, creating four length films
that were divided into half hours episodes, making up the fifth season, and
eventually the sixth and seventh season.
The series finale is set for
September 4th. Both David X. Cohen, the executive producer of the show and
Matt Groening, the creator
weren’t very surprised by the bad news, but they say that the best episodes are
yet to come, and if Comedy Central maintain their position on the show, they
will find a new home for the show.
In an interview to EW, Groening
and Cohen the creator and executive producer respectively of the show had this
to say about the decision:
“We’ve been in this situation
before and it’s tempting when you’re doing episodes that are as good or better
than anything you’ve ever done to continue doing it,” Groening tells EW. “We’re
catching our breath and seeing what the fans have to say. The experience of
this show has been so much fun from the very beginning to now — everybody is so
happy to work on this show — that it’d be a shame if we all went our separate
ways… We would love to continue. We have many more stories to tell. But if we
don’t, this is a really great way to go out… I think these episodes are the
best ones we’ve ever done.”
